Zippo uses codes that are engraved at the bottom of the zippo case. The first codes appeared back in 1933 and since then form of the codes has changed a lot. In the beginning, codes were in PAT***** form, then in Patent Pendin, "year" **** and so on. Zippo codes showed excellent for collectors who can easily find out if some zippo is the one they need to finish their collection.
